Abstract

The similarities between traditional Tamil dances and sports reveal the connection between the activities of life. Professional dance was also described as a sport. Sports and dance not only enhanced the efficiency of traditional occupations, but also helped to develop knowledge governance, insurgency governance, movement governance, etc. Through these, the spirit of “joy” was developed. The goal of play is to bring joy, explains the Tolkappiyam, “The game of wealth is a game of perception, and there are four kinds of pleasures” (Tol.1205).In the continuous struggle of man with the environment, games and dances helped to increase human resources, increase strength, and assimilate the environment. They provided peace, comfort, self-defence, joy, etc. They reinforced group spirit and group activities. Dances and games help to understand the evolutionary development or evolutionary behaviours of living beings.
