Abstract

One of the cultural symbols of tamil society is “Eru Thazhuvuthal” (bull embracing). Civilizational transitions have refined human lifestyles, fostering progress. A significant aspect of this transformation was the domestication of wild animals, a process that was neither quick nor easy. The Tamil people likely endured many losses over time to achieve this. Those who tamed wild animals using their bravery eventually transformed them into domestic animals. Over time, this act of taming evolved into a traditional sport.
Eru Thazhuvuthal involves letting a bull run free and humans attempting to subdue it or hold onto its horns and bring it under control. This study aims to analyze the narrative from the Velpari, which recounts how Velpari’s ancestor, Soolivel, tamed a wild buffalo and subsequently married Thoothuvai, a woman from the Tiraiyar clan.
