Abstract

When man lived uncivilized, his life was only directed towards food. Having acquired the basic knowledge of food, clothing and shelter, he became civilized, different from other living beings and began to live a higher life with love and virtue. While love and virtue are degenerating, Noble persons appeared and gave good news about love and virtue to the people. The role of moral literature is great in paving the way for the progress of the people of the world. While many virtues lead man to the noble life of the world, many moral literatures in Tamil also teach the highest virtues of human life. A virtue that is fundamental to all virtues, the virtue of non-killing, which has the merit of protecting and respecting other living beings, is considered noble. Non-killing is non-killing of humans, animals, insects and birds. Assuring the right to life, the right of
all living beings, without killing any living being for any reason, is the supreme cultural achievement of the civilized race of man. The Non-Killing thinking is a testament to the cultured mind of man. Murders are taking place in the world today. Apart from this, the higher moral of non-killing becomes necessary for the individual to live happily and to allow other beings to live. On the main basis that every individual should have the thought of Non killing is the need of today, after such Non killing appeared in Tamil society, after the Sanga literatures, which had established themselves to define the time, would emphasize various virtues However, the purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of the highest
virtue called Non killing and the concept emphasized in the Tamil moral literature.
