Abstract

It can be considered that short stories have appeared in Tamil since the Sangam literary period. Pathappattu, Thirumurukaaruppadi, Porunararruppadi, Perupanarruppadi, Chirupanarruppadi and Kuttararruppadi are the five archetypes. Panirupatiyal give grammar to some of the earliest short stories of the tenth century.

In Pathinenkeezhkanikil, there are forty to seventy Muthumozhikanji in the
nineteenth century. Sitralikiya vagaigal have appeared since the time when the Alvars and Nayans began to sing Arutpasuram. The Anthadi madal, Palandu Palli Eltchi and the Pavai, Ezhukutrukai are short stories that arose many centuries ago in many Alwar poems.
