Contemporary Society Reflected in Bharathiar’s Poems
Abstract
An unparalleled poet of the twentieth century, Bharathiyar lived a full life by the age of 39. Bharathi’s thoughts cannot dissolve with yesterday and wind. As long as there is sea and mountains, as long as there is sky and earth, it will stand and guide the society. He had experienced many miracles, wonders and social evils that even those who lived to be 100 years old could not experience. Poetry is the art of the Tamils. Every emotion of the Tamils from birth to death. He beat the drum against the whites, and at the other end fought furiously to exterminate the demons of fear, stupidity and slavery that had conquered the inferior Indian people. There are only two weapons he wields to handle these two things. One is poetry and the other is prose. Bharathi thinks about the individual and reveals many truths about the relationship between the individual and society in his songs. He expressed the Indian culture, religion, art and literature of his time through his poetry. Mahakavi was the first to introduce modernity in Tamil poetry.
